El proyecto Kuwu surge desde un resultado del proyecto basal de centros de investigación interdisciplinaria. Kuwu es un dispositivo diseñado para niños, estudiantes, o adultos ciegos; que permite sentir sus dibujos táctiles en tiempo real. Este producto consiste en un dispositivo con forma de lápiz, que funciona con lana, sobre una superficie de velcro. Kuwu permite a las personas ciegas crear sus propios dibujos con una retroalimentación automático de sus creaciones, empoderando habilidades tales como su potencial creativo, coordinación visoespacial, y el desarrollo de sus habilidades motoras finas. Es una herramienta divertida, inclusiva y de bajo costo, que provee una oportunidad de interacción social para personas ciegas y con vista.

Kuwu actualmente ha ganado dos premios internos de la universidad, el programa Edulab y el IV Global UC. Con el primer premio se trabajó en la terminación de un prototipo mínimo viable de la herramienta, así como en un primer modelo de empaquetemiento y productos accesorios, de manera de poder transferir la tecnología al mercado.

El segundo premio brindó la oportunidad de poder viajar a Boston (Estados Unidos); con la intención de buscar socios en materias de producción y distribución de la herramienta. A su vez se realizaron visitas a dos organizaciones para personas ciegas que se encuentran dentro de las más importantes en el mundo, la Overbrock School for the Blind en Philadelphia, en donde se realizaron pruebas con alumnos de esta escuela con distintos tipos de discapacidades visuales, y la Carroll Center for the Blind, en donde se conversó acerca del real impacto que puede tener esta herramienta en la comunidad, tanto en personas con discapacidades como en personas de desarrollo típico.

Actualmente, CEDETi UC ha producido 35 unidades del lápiz manufacturadas en resina que serán enviadas a las más importantes instituciones para ciegos de Chile, Estados Unidos, España, y Alemania, de manera de obtener la retroalimentación necesaria para pasar a una etapa de producción de mercado.

The Kuwu project arises from a result of the basal project of interdisciplinary research centers. Kuwu is a device designed for children, students, or blind adults; that allows you to feel your tactile drawings in real time. This product consists of a pencil-shaped device, that works with yarn, on a Velcro© surface. Kuwu allows blind people to create their own drawings with an automatic feedback of their creations, empowering skills such as their creative potential, visuospatial coordination, and the development of their fine motor skills. It is a fun, inclusive and low-cost tool that provides an opportunity for social interaction for blind and sighted people.

Kuwu has currently won two internal awards from the university, the Edulab program and the IV Global UC. With the first prize we worked on the completion of a minimum viable prototype of the tool, and also on a first model of packaging and accessory products, in order to transfer the technology to the market.

The second prize offered the opportunity to travel to Boston, USA; with the intention of finding partners in matters of production and distribution of the tool. At the same time, we visit two organizations for blind people that are among the most important in the world, the Overbrock School for the Blind in Philadelphia, where tests were conducted with students of this school with different types of visual disabilities, and the Carroll Center for the Blind, where we talked about the real impact that this tool can have in the community, both in people with disabilities and in people of typical development.

Currently, CEDETi UC has produced 35 pencil units manufactured in resin that will be sent to the most important institutions for the blind in Chile, the United States, Spain, and Germany for usability testing’s, in order to obtain the necessary feedback to move to a market production stage.
